*Please submit entries by April 13, 2017. Judging will take place on April 14, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. Three age groups: 0-5 years, 6-9 years, and 10 years and older. A prize will be awarded to each age group. No purchase or customer relationship necessary to enter or win. One entry per person. Winner will be notified by telephone. Children of Merchants employees are not eligible to win.

Meet the Next Winners of Merchants Bank’s Money Ball in Cannon Falls

During the Cannon Falls and Kenyon-Wanamingo Boy’s basketball game on Friday, February 3, two students claimed prizes for making shots during Merchants Bank’s Money Ball, according to Jenny Holz, who is coordinating Money Ball for Merchants Bank.

Falon Hepola, competing in the 1st-5th grade category, made a lay-up and free throw and earned $15. Kaden Andersen, competing in the 6th-12th grade category, made a free throw and 3-pointer to earn $35.

“The crowd was pulling for them to make their shots,” Holz said. “We’re hoping someone will be able to make the half-court shot the next game.”

The next and last chance for the season is during the Cannon Falls and Goodhue Girl’s game Friday, February 10.

To be eligible, students sign up before halftime of the varsity game. Two contestants are then chosen randomly, one from 1st-5th grade and another from 6th-12th grade. Each contestant has a minute to make shots. The 1st-5th grader wins $5 for a made lay-up, $10 for made free throw, and then if both shots have been made, the student has one chance to win $25 for a made 3-pointer. If a 3-pointer isn’t made, the money rolls over to the next game. The 6th-12th grader wins $10 for a made free throw, $25 for a 3-pointer, and if both shots have been made, the student has one chance to win $100 for a half-court shot. If the half-courter isn’t made, the money rolls over to the next game.

No customer relationship is necessary to enter or win. Merchants Bank employees and family members are not eligible to enter or win.

Rick comes to Merchants Bank Equipment Finance with extensive industry experience, including nearly 20 years of working in equipment finance with GE, TCF, and most recently, US Bank. Rick’s responsibilities for the last nine years with US Bank were as Vice President National Accounts Manager. He brings extensive leadership, sales management, and relationship building experience to our Merchants organization.

In the fall, Kristin and her husband like to go out hunting and enjoy the outdoors.

Stolen Mail in Red Wing
Customers in Red Wing, Hampton and the surrounding areas have reported an increase in stolen mail, including people who use their mailbox for outgoing mail.

We’d like to remind all customers to be cautious when sending or receiving personal information, bank account information or checks through the mail. To protect yourself or your business, consider following these recommendations from the Federal Trade Commission:

  • Take outgoing mail to post office collection boxes or the post office.
  • Promptly remove mail that arrives in your mailbox. If you won’t be home for several days, request a vacation hold on your mail.
  • When you order new checks, don’t have them mailed to your home, unless you have a secure mailbox with a lock.

“Can You Hear Me?” Scam
The Better Business Bureau is warning individuals to be cautious when answering your phone. If someone asks “can you hear me?,” just hang up. By answering “yes” your voice may be recorded and used to authorize a purchase you didn’t make.

Lottery Scams
Some of our customers have also recently fallen victim to lottery scams. If you or someone you know is asked to send money to someone else in order to receive a monetary prize, that’s a red flag. Be skeptical of any offers…if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Phone Calls Regarding Bad Credit
We have also had customers report receiving phone calls from an agency claiming to help customer fix bad credit history in order to obtain personal and bank account information. Please be cautious of any communication (phone call, email or website pop-up page) asking you to provide personal information. If you don’t know who is calling, ask the caller to provide more information, do your research and end the call if you are not comfortable.

Merchants Bank will never ask for your personal information unless you have previously initiated a conversation with us about your accounts or an application.

Chip Card Security
After issuing new MasterCard EMV Chip Debit Cards at the end of 2016, Merchants has seen a decrease in fraudulent debit card transactions. Our new chip debit cards provide enhanced security when paying in-store by generating a one-time use code that can only be read by a register enabled to read chip cards. The code is created from the small chip on the front of your card and is hard to counterfeit, which prevents fraud.

If you do not have a Merchants Bank Debit Card, you can request one by contacting our Electronic Banking department. Debit cards are free with all Personal and Business Checking and Savings Accounts.

If you think your bank account information has been compromised or you are a victim of identity theft, contact your local Merchants Bank and ask to speak to a Customer Service Representative.

At the end of January, Rod Nelson retired from his role as President & Chief Executive Officer for the Merchants organization. In his 17 years at Merchants, Rod provided remarkable leadership for the Bank and challenged all of us to be committed to an ongoing pursuit of excellence.

Space doesn’t permit me to share all that I have learned during my 17 years of having the good fortune to work with and for Rod. One thing that I will never forget is Rod’s leadership drive to making sure our customers are not just satisfied, but truly pleased. It is my hope that as you read this edition of our e-newsletter that you are one of the many customers we have who falls into the truly pleased category. If we haven’t earned that from you yet, please know we are working toward that end.
